Why I Created This Low Back Pain eBook

Why I Created This Low Back Pain eBook

Lower back pain is a problem that affects so many people around the world. As an osteopath working in London, England, lower back pain is one of the most common problems I treat.

The problem with lower back pain is that there are so many causes, it can sometimes be hard to diagnose. This is why it can take so long for patients to be seen by their doctor and get to a good diagnosis.

Most of the time patients are sent away with a prescription for pain medication and are told to come back if the problem gets worse.

There’s a reason this happens.

First of all, doctors have such little time available to them that they have to decide in only a few minutes if they think your pain is serious and worth referring you elsewhere, or if it is likely to be musculoskeletal and therefore not serious, in which case they will send you home with pain medication.

The thing with back pain though (particularly the type of back pain I see) is that most of the time it can get better if the patient does the required steps to get themselves better. The problem here is that many patients don’t get given the advice they need, or they don't follow it.

After 12 years of clinical practice as an osteopath in London, England, I have seen what is needed to get better from musculoskeletal back pain.

In fact I have also suffered from lower back pain for 7 years following a gym related injury.

After developing my own rehabilitation program I can now say I am back pain free and back doing the physical activities I love (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu).

Throughout my time as an osteopath treating patients and rehabilitating my own injury, I have seen what works and what doesn't, and now I get my patients to follow this exact same process to overcome their back pain.

The success I have had with my patients is what led me to creating this eBook.

I know that for so many people around the world it can be hard for them to get access to the right healthcare.

For some, they may live too far away to regularly see someone for treatment or rehab.

For others regular treatment or rehab is too expensive.

Some people can’t even physically leave their own homes.

This is why I created this ebook.

I want people to have access to their very own resource that will help them overcome their pain, and start rebuilding their back so that they can get out and start enjoying their lives again and not have to worry about their pain holding them back.

What Does This eBook Cover?

What Does This eBook Cover?

This is the most detailed and comprehensive guide I could have created about lower back pain and I am pretty sure you will not find one better in my opinion.

But this means I have had to split it up into 3 parts so that you can easily navigate between each phase.

The following is what each part contains...

PART 1 - The Main Book

PART 1 - The Main Book

This eBook is literally everything I go through with my patients (except for the hands on treatment). I have left nothing out because I want you to have the best chances of improving your lower back pain.

Anatomy
If you have ever seen any of my YouTube videos you will likely have seen me start with an anatomy review of the area.

It is important you get a good understanding of the anatomy of the back and how this can relate to your pain. The location of pain can mean different things; most of the time this is musculoskeletal, but in some cases it's more than that.

Either way, you need to be aware of these things.

Self Diagnosis
The common lower back pain problems have similar areas of pain. In this section I help you decipher what could be the cause of your lower back pain based on the location and type of pain.

(Bear in mind that you should always go to see a qualified healthcare practitioner and not rely on the information included here to diagnose your problem).

Common and Possible Causes Of Lower Back Pain
These sections explain the common and not so common causes of lower back pain to make you aware of the possibilities that could be causing your lower back pain.

The 3 Phases Of Injury Recovery
Again, if you have watched any of my YouTube videos you may have heard me talk about how I work in THREE phases to help people overcome their injuries;

The 3 Phases Of Injury Recovery
Again, if you have watched any of my YouTube videos you may have heard me talk about how I work in THREE phases to help people overcome their injuries;
  • Phase 1: Decrease Pain & Inflammation
  • Phase 2: Increase Flexibility & Mobility
  • Phase 3: Build Strength & Stability
Putting It All Together
Once you know what phase you're in the next step is to put your new knowledge into action.

Here we go through how to follow the plan based on what phase you are in and whether you need to begin stretching or strengthening.

Back Pain Tips & Tricks
Also covered in this eBook are some tips & tricks for people with lower back pain such as;
  • Should you buy a new mattress?
  • Is swimming good for back pain?
  • What's the best position to sleep in?
  • How to stand up from a chair when your back is in pain.

Part 2 - The Stretches

Part 2 - The Stretches

As you begin your rehab journey you will need to stretch areas of tightness so that your muscles can function better, ready to be strengthened.

Most of my lower back pain patients have various areas of tightness; mainly in their lower back, hanstrings, hips and glutes.

This part of the eBook will take you through my 15 most commonly prescribed stretches, foam rolling or massage ball techniques.

At the end of the stretches book there is a sample weekly stretch routine for you to follow throughout the week.

Part 3 - Strengthening Exercises

Part 3 - Strengthening Exercises

Once you've improved your flexibility it is time to move on to rebuilding your strength so that you can prevent pain coming back.

This is the section where you will really be amazed at how much you are improving.

You may start to become stronger than you have been for years and you may find you are gradually able to do movements or activities that you haven't dared to try for years!

These are my 11 most prescribed exercises to my patients that progress from easy to hard as you get stronger.

All of these exercises can be done at home with minimal to no equipment needed.

There is also a 12 week programe for you to follow which starts of very gentle and gradually progresses as you get stronger and more confident.

About Ashley Ridout

About Ashley Ridout

Hi!

I’m Ashley, I'm an osteopath based in North London, United Kingdom. I'm not a doctor like osteopaths are in the United States, so I don't prescribe medications. Instead, I'm more like a chiropractor and physiotherapist combined.

In 2010 I qualified as an osteopath and have probably worked with thousands of patients during this time, from children to elderly and from professional athletes to your average desk worker.

I know how it feels to have a lower back injury (as well as many other injuries). In 2014 I injured my back in the gym leading to years of pain. Eventually I developed my own rehab plan and got myself pain free. This was the beginning of what has now become the plan outlined in this eBook.

When I'm not working I love spending time with my wife and year old daughter, and to keep fit I love doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and of course maintaining my strength in the gym.

Testimonials

L. Rose (London, UK)

My back pain first started in 2020. It felt a bit out of the blue and wasn’t one particular exercise or movement that caused it, but rather an accumulation of various day-to-day stresses that my body was put under.

I have always loved exercising and enjoyed pushing myself to see progress and achieving my goals. I felt like I’d always tried to balance this with getting enough rest days and including lower intensity workouts such as yoga and meditation. However, it was probably inevitable that this constant activity, along with a love of long walks and having a physical job, would eventually lead my body to breaking point!

My ‘pain’ could be best described as an ache and stiffness through the lumbar and gluteus areas. At its worst it prevented me from being able to carry on with my everyday routine. Not only did this mean I had to stop exercising, but I also found that even standing and walking for longer periods of time became uncomfortable. I would have to stop what I was doing and rest or stretch my back regularly. So for someone who’s always been active and, at that point not yet 40, this was demoralising. It felt like everything that I enjoyed was being taken away from me.

It was at this point that I decided to search the internet for advice and this is where I found Ashley Ridout. After listening to a few of his videos and signing up to his emails, he reached out to me to see if he could help with my particular situation. I spent several months taking a break from my usual workouts and then trying to restart slowly, adding in some of the stretches and exercises that Ashley had recommended. However in my rush not to lose what I had previously gained fitness-wise, my pain would return and I would be back to square one again. I was getting frustrated that I wasn’t seeing any improvement.

It wasn’t until I read Ashley’s Low Back Pain E-book that I really started to understand what I had to do. The e-book explains the body’s anatomy in simple terms and the importance of working through the phases of recovery in a systematic way.

Since following the plan I have seen considerable improvement in my lower back. I still get days when it plays up, but these are getting fewer and I’m in a lesser degree of pain. I’m really glad that I decided to give Ashley’s programme a try as it has led me to a more positive point both physically and mentally. Not only did the e-book give me the physical tools that I needed and the process to follow, it also taught me to be much more patient on my path to recovery! Thanks Ashley.

R. Shelton (Coventry, UK)

Having always enjoyed the wonderful and vital ‘gift’ of mobility which is (unfortunately) so often taken for granted, it came as a surprise that one day in retirement I would encounter lower back pain. I do not mean niggling back ache, this was pain off the scale, 10 ++ level, and it was terrifying. I can only describe it as though someone was discharging a TASER gun in my lower back. Never having experienced anything like it before, I could not, and dare not move and just lay in bed and prayed. Some 3 days later I became mobile just enough to get downstairs.

Analysing what had happened, I attributed the injury to my enthusiastic efforts to clear a large snow fall from around my house by wielding a large and heavy snow shovel. It was not until the next day however that the pain started to build, and so began the above episode that I hope I NEVER have to experience again.

Anyway, my prayers were answered when I started on-line research to find ways to prevent such back problems. I came across Ashley’s video channel, and it made a momentous change in my life. I learnt from him about the three phases of (lower back) pain, and how to deal with each phase in turn, with the ultimate goal of preventing that pain from ever returning.

Ashley’s  ‘Beat Your Low Back Pain’ E-book has now become a ‘bible’ for me, a complete tool box of help and advice to understand the anatomy of the back and how and why pain might develop and how to manage and prevent such pain occurring in the future.

That was over two years ago, and since then I have managed to stay relatively pain free and realise the need to listen to one’s body and modify activity accordingly. I also keep some strong pain killers in the bedside cabinet in case I should relapse and need to start the whole healing process again from phase one!

To be fair, the book can only take you so far because the final (strengthening) phase really depends on how much work you are prepared to put in yourself, but at least it shows you how and exactly what to do – the rest is up to you!

It is obvious to anyone reading the book that Ashley has put a lot of compassionate thought into its construction and presentation, and that he has a genuine desire to help prevent such suffering – There should be more people like him in this world.

Thankyou Ashley!
